ABORIGINAL DREAMTIME FINE ART GALLERY is pleased to present Dreamings: Works by Gabrielle Pool. Sydney-based artist Gabrielle Pool was born in 1976 in Kaharoa, New Zealand. Since her first exhibition at the age of 16, held in Japan, her work has continued to receive commercial and critical acclaim.  Over the last 20 years her paintings have been exhibited in solo and group shows in New Zealand, Australia, Japan, China, the U.K., Greece and the Bahamas. She was invited by Nelson Mandela to travel to Africa to collaborate in the Unity Series alongside 20 other leading international artists, in a project launched at the World Economic Forum at Davos in 2005. Thus began her love affair with Africa and her commitment to recording the lives and cultures of vanishing tribes. During her time in Kibera, Africa’s largest slum, she taught orphans with AIDS how to paint.

Gabrielle has been the subject of numerous print articles. In 2007, she was the subject of a national TVNZ documentary in her native New Zealand, which focussed on her career as an artist, while National Geographic Australia published an article on her role as an explorer.

The works Gabrielle produced in the wilds of Africa often incoporate the use of sacred tribal body paints. “When I was younger I painted what I saw – a simple realism that was figurative and, to the casual observer, true. I have since learned that I search for the abstract in the real, and for the real in the abstract.”

Gabrielle’s most recent work is the outcome of two journeys to Central Australia in 2010. She spent a privileged, private time with several indigenous female artists of Utopia, seeking truth in life and death. Gabrielle says she felt connected to an infinite and recurring story.

“I will never be able to coherently articulate what happened during that time. I can only paint my version of what I felt and saw, and I hope that it can be experienced by others through my work. My painting has always been driven by a desire to preserve and record the history of ancient peoples and the environment in which they live, as part of a world which seems to be trying its very best to eradicate or “civilize” them. I am inspired by the pureness and the appreciation of life shown by these ancient people. Armed with only a paintbrush, I began my journey in Africa, in some of the wildest and most beautiful terrain on earth, recording my impressions of the landscapes and the faces, the spirits and the animals. Then I came back home to Australia to sleep under the stars and paint the Aboriginal culture. I created this collection of ”Dreamings“and I hope it serves as an inspiration to make these dreams remain a reality.”

“You cannot paint white on white, or black on black, everyone needs the other in order to be seen” - Manu Dibango
